SPF or Sender Policy Framework, is an open standard that allows the owner of a domain to specify which mail servers they use to send mail from that domain. SPF allows email receiver to check that an email claiming to come from a specific domain comes from an IP address authorized by that domain's owners or administrators. SPF is just one of many factors that ISPs use to determine whether an email should be delivered.

Implementation of SPF

SPF is quite simple to implement. Like other authenentication mechanisms, SPF also relies on DNS. As a matter of fact, all you need to implement SPF is to create special DNS records. You can implement SPF in four easy steps.

Step 1. Determine the domains that your email campaigns are sent from

Domain is the part of the email address after the @ sign. For example, if the email address from which you will be sending email campaigns is contact@mycompany.com, then the domain is mycompany.com. You need to create SPF DNS record for this domain.

Step 2. Gather all IP addresses used to send the emails

This is a very important step because you may be sending email campaigns from several IP addresses. You need to confirm your IP addresses with your ESP or your network administrator.

Step 3. Create your SPF record

As mentioned above, SPF requires a special DNS record. We recommend that you use some online tool for generating the SPF record for your domain. For example, you can use SPFWizard for this.

Step 4. Add your SPF record to your DNS

The final step is to publish you SPF record in DNS. This step depends on the registrar of your domain. You need to create a TXT type record and add the SPF generated in Step 3. Please refere to your domain registrar for this step.

It is very important that you setup SPF as a part of authentication initiative. You can read more about SPF on the standard's website at http://www.openspf.org
